The following outlines considerations regarding application scenarios, operational guidelines, and storage management.

     

    I. Application Scenarios: Selection Based on Different Wound Types

    Choosing the right Gauze swab based on the type of wound and the stage of treatment can enhance nursing outcomes:

    Clean and dry the wound: For sterile sutures or minor epidermal abrasions with minimal exudate, simply cover the wound with standard cotton gauze. Whether to keep the wound moist or dry should be determined according to medical advice.

    Wounds with abundant exudate: Open wounds such as ulcers, burns, and postoperative infections require highly absorbent Gauze swabs, which may be layered as needed. External dressings can also be used in conjunction to absorb exudate and reduce maceration of the surrounding skin.

    Bleeding wounds: For puncture sites, post-nail extraction, lacerations, etc., a Gauze swab soaked in hemostatic ingredients can be used for compressive hemostasis, followed by covering with ordinary gauze once the bleeding has stopped.

    Wounds that require prevention of adhesion: For wounds with active granulation tissue growth, non-adhesive Gauze swab or oil gauze can be used to reduce secondary injury during dressing changes.

     

    II. Sterile vs. Non-Sterile: Distinguishing Usage Scenarios

    Gauze swabs are classified into sterile and ordinary grades based on the sterilization method, with different application scenarios:

    Sterile Gauze Swab: Sterilized by ethylene oxide or irradiation, individually packaged or contained in a sealed container, and can be used directly for sterile coverage of open wounds, surgical incisions, burn wounds, and other similar conditions.

    Non-sterile Gauze swab: Not sterilized, can be used to absorb moisture on the surface of intact skin, wipe, or serve as a buffer layer for external dressings, but shall not be in direct contact with broken skin.

     

    III. Operating Procedures: Precautions from Packaging to Replacement

    Proper operational procedures can reduce the risk of contamination and enhance patient comfort:

    Preparation before use: Before using a sterile Gauze swab, hands should be cleaned according to the seven-step handwashing method, and disposable medical gloves should be worn. Check whether the packaging is damaged and whether it is within the validity period.

    How to open: The sterile Gauze swab should be torn from the seal and taken out by pinching a corner of the edge, avoiding touching the middle area.

    Covering thickness: Adjust the number of Gauze swab layers according to the amount of exudate. Usually, one layer is used as the contact layer, and several layers can be wrapped on the outside as the absorption layer.

    Fixation method: Secure the Gauze swab with medical tape or a bandage, ensuring it is neither too loose nor too tight.

    Replacement frequency: Gauze swabs are generally recommended to be changed daily or as needed based on the amount of exudate; they should be replaced immediately once they become wet to maintain a dry wound environment.

     

    IV. Storage Management: The Foundation for Maintaining the Performance of Gauze Swabs

    The storage environment of Gauze swab directly affects its sterility and material properties:

    Storage conditions: Gauze swabs should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. High humidity can cause mold to grow on the gauze, while high temperatures may affect the strength of the cotton fibers.

    Package integrity: Sterile Gauze swabs should not be squeezed during stacking to avoid package damage; non-sterile Gauze swabs should be stored in a clean cabinet to prevent contamination by insects, rodents, and dust.

    First-in, first-out principle: Use products in the order of their production dates to prevent Gauze swabs from expiring and losing sterility or from fiber aging and becoming brittle.

    Post-Opening Management: Once a large package of sterile gauze is opened and not fully used, the remaining portion must be stored in a sealed container and used within the specified time limit; it must not be retained indefinitely.

     

    V. Common Issues and Responses

    Some situations may arise during the use of Gauze swab, and understanding the causes can help you respond appropriately:

    Adhesion of gauze to the wound: During dressing changes, if the gauze is found adhered to the wound surface, do not forcibly pull it off. Instead, first moisten the gauze with sterile saline or povidone-iodine, allow the tissue fluid to soften the adherent area, and then gently remove the gauze.

    Leakage after liquid absorption saturation: indicates insufficient gauze layering or untimely replacement; increase the gauze thickness or shorten the replacement interval.

    Skin allergy: A small number of patients are sensitive to cotton fibers or added ingredients; hypoallergenic or additive-free Gauze swab can be used instead.

    Gauze swab shedding: If you find that gauze fibers are left in the wound, they should be carefully removed during the next dressing change; severely shedding gauze swabs should not be used again.
